Cactus Speed Classic Tucson, AZ - Nov. 1, 1998 |
The men's race was challenging. Jon Elliot and Jay Etheredge of Team
Hyper were the ones to keep an eye on. Their strategy was to take turns
making breaks while the other hung back. Dana kept them in check.
A little before midway Jon shot ahead alone. I wasn't paying attention,
and when I realized what happened, I gave chase. Unfortunately, I failed
to catch him, and he managed to hold off the chase pack to the finish
line.
For the rest of us, it was a race for 2nd. Jay came in 2nd, followed by
Michael Weitz (BSI), Dana, and I. Joe also finished in the chase pack.
Goals met:
Wendy - Finished 1st, beat all of her competitors.
Dana - Beat Tom Ashton, 98 masters champion, again.
Joe - Best finish ever for this distance.
Alice - Won her division.
Bob - 2nd place division, discovering a new competitor from
Team Air (Arizona).
Me - Avoided collision with a saguaro cactus.
Next big race is the Phoenix New Times 10k Sunday 11/15.
