The Run for Shelter 10k took place this past Saturday 5/29 in Pasadena. It was the only skate race scheduled at the Rose Bowl this year. Drizzle left the roads damp on this cloudy morning with temperatures around 60. About 50 skaters representing the entire tri-state region lined up for the 8:00am start.

The event organizers were unable to secure the entire 5k loop around the Rose Bowl and golf course. So the course was 2 1/2 out-and-back loops on the western road. It had a gradual slope with wide U-turns around islands at both ends.

The pace started out fast at first, but then slowed as the pack hit the main road. Jay Etheredge (Hyper) went on a flyer early, so I (Howard) chased. We weren't going too fast, but fast enough to develop a sizable gap from the main pack before the 1st U-turn.

Meanwhile, Jay's teammate Jon Elliot kept the main pack back. But upon careful observation, he concluded that the chase pack was so disorganized and lazy to the point that they would never reel in the two leaders. Therefore, he took off.

Once Jon hooked up with Jay, I knew I was in for a tough game. I hung in there for a while, but eventually working together they were able drop me. So that was it. Jay and Jon finished together and I came in 3rd. Joe Prescott (SDSE) finished at the head of the chase pack.

Helle Carlsen (Kryptonics) finished in that men's chase pack to win the women's race. Congratulations to Alice Eads (SDSE) for winning her age group once again.
