Rockin' Summer Classic San Diego, CA - Aug. 24, 2002 |
Team Safe excelled in the Pro/Elite and Women's categories. Scott Wolf
and Haley Galbraith won all five events in their categories which
composed the omnium. The rest of the field fought a hard battle for
the top spots. Keith Henry (Tucson) consistently came in second for
second overall. Matthew Gabel (Desert Storm), with a strong sprint,
accumulated enough points for a third place finish.
The competition was stiffer among the Women, but with similar results.
Michelle Gaylor (Predator) consistently finished second for second
place overall. There was a tie in overall points for third, but SDSE's
Wendy Holbert placed higher in more races to take the position over
fellow teammate Cyndi Matsuda. The photo finish in a match sprint
between these two demonstrated the closeness in their speed.
Arizona skaters took the top places in the Advanced, the largest
category. Team Pirate took first place in every race to give Curtis
Magee the overall victory and Michael Harrington second. Just a point
behind was Greg Bowe (Predator) for third place.
SDSE added two categories for our young racers this year. Jamie
Armstrong (Pirates) won the Juniors 13-17 category. Caitlin Welzig
(Desert Storm) edged out her brother Christopher by just one point in
the omnium for second place. In Elementary 12 & Under, Wendy Dalton
(Desert Storm) took first place over Amber Wilkinson (Pirates)
second and Alexis Vachris (Pirates) third.
The four skaters in the Intermediate/Beginner category were all from
Arizona. They were closely matched as points were awarded across the
board. In the end, Alexandra Court (Predator) took the win with
Chelsea Wilkinson (Pirates) just a point behind. In third place
overall was Samantha Burr (Pirates).
