Rockin' Summer Classic San Diego, CA - Aug. 23, 2003 |
Team Safe's Scott Wolf dominated in the Pro/Elite category, but not
without competition from the other racers such as Curtis Magee
(Dust Devils). Magee managed to beat out Wolf in the match sprint
competition by just a wheel. Brian Talley (American Flyers) finished
third in total points at the end of the day.
Alexandra Scott of the Dust Devils dominated similarly among the
Women, but the battle was on for second. Michelle Gaylor (Predator)
and SDSE's Wendy Holbert achieved the same number of points in the
same manner, making tie-breaking impossible. So both women agreed
to a dramatic one-lap sprint. Holbert managed to sqeak by Gaylor for
the win.
Competition in the Advanced category, our largest category, was
fierce as points were distributed among ten of the entrants. Tyrone
Oliver (Dust Devils) won most of the races for the overall victory.
SDSE's Brandon Thorsten accumulated enough points for second place
overall. Randy Cottew (Predator) employed a successful strategy to
win the Reverse Win & Out race and finish third place overall
for the day.
In the Junior 13-17 category, Nicolas Frederick (American Flyers)
took the top spot on the podium along with teammate Wendy Dalton in
second. Kariann Saltsman of Rialto Speed finished third. Those
spots were hard-fought as these competitors skated a long Miss &
Out race.
All entrants in the Elementary 12 & Under category earned
points. Ariana Wright (OC Speed) finished just one point ahead of
Breanna Klinger (Rialto) in the omnium for the win. These skaters
also did a long Miss & Out.
Skaters in the Beginner/Intermediate category may have been new to
racing, but that didn't mean that the racing wasn't hot. In the end,
Brandon Dunham won the category, with Alex Martinez (Dust Devils)
close behind and Claire Zimmerman (Dust Devils) in third place.
Hyper Wheels donated extra prizes for the top male and female
finishers in the Hyper Xtra Race. This year's race was a 30-Lap
Scratch that was open to all skaters and did not count towards the
omnium. Many skaters decided to enter the optional race. Curtis
Magee took a hard-fought victory after a dramatic final sprint.
Alexandra Scott won the prize among the females.
SDSE would like to thank Hyper Wheels, Verducci Racing, and North
Park Trophy & Award for supporting the 2003 Rockin' Summer
Classic. Changes will be made to the 2004 event to accomodate the
