Koz Enterprises has added an inline skate race to the fourth annual Silver Strand Half Marathon on November 16, 2003. SDSE is very excited about the event, since it is the first road race in San Diego in over five years. SDSE has volunteered to serve as consultants to Koz Enterprises to ensure a safe and fun event for all. The official event website is at http://www.kozenterprises.com.

SDSE has created this FAQ to answer most questions people will have in regards to the skate race at this time. If you have any questions or comments about the inline portion of the Silver Strand Half Marathon that are not addressed here, please direct them to SDSE at sdse@sk8.org rather than Koz Enterprises. Thank you!

Q01. What is the course like?

A01. The race starts at Sunset Park on Coronado Island. Specifically, it is Point #4 of SDSE's Coronado Island skate. From the start, you head straight by the Hotel del Coronado and onto Silver Strand Blvd.

The majority of the course is down the Silver Strand. State Route 75 is a divided highway with two lanes in each direction. The south-bound lanes were just repaved with smooth asphalt in April 2003. The route is completely flat with the exception of one rise for an overpass over a cross street. This highway parallels the bike path on SDSE's Silver Strand skate. Please note that the race will take place on the highway, not the bike path.

Upon entering Imperial Beach, the course makes quite a few turns along the residential streets. Then, miles 9 through 12 are on a 1.5-mile out-and-back route on the U.S. Naval Radio Facility. This section is a narrow two-lane road with racers travelling in both directions. The U-turn at the end is narrow, but will be well-marked. Passing will be difficult to impossible in this section. Competitive skaters should plan their race strategies accordingly.

After exiting the Naval Radio Facility, the course makes two additional turns. The last stretch to the finish line is 1/4 mile long, wide, and straight. Plan to Party at the Pier after the race!

Please refer to the Course Map for additional details.

Q02. Is the race on the bike path?

A02. No!

Q03. When is the start?

A03. The races start at 7:00am. The skaters will start first. Five minutes later the wheelchairs will start. Five minutes later will be the National Leg Amputee Championship and able-bodied competitors start. Five minutes after that the runners will start.

Some of the faster wheelchairs and runners will overtake some of the slower skaters. As a courtesy and for safety, please keep right to allow faster competitors to pass.

Q04. How do I get to the start or back from the finish?

A04. Official parking for the event is at the Silver Strand State Beach, about half way between Coronado Island and Imperial Beach. Shuttle buses will transport competitors from the parking lot to the starting line and from the finish line party back to the parking lot. The shuttle does not run all the way back to Coronado Island after the race.

There is limited street parking on Coronado Island and in Imperial Beach for those racers who wish to be dropped off at the start and then met at the finish by friends and family.

Alternatively, you may choose to skate from the parking lot to the starting line on the bike path as a warm-up. This is part of SDSE's Silver Strand skate. You can also skate from the Party at the Pier back to the parking lot on the bike path.

Q05. Are skates allowed on the shuttle buses?

A05. Sorry, skates may not be worn on the shuttle buses. However, a baggage truck will transport gear bags from the start to the finish. Be sure to mark your bag clearly with your name and bib number.

Q06. How do I register?

A06. Register online today at Active.com or use the printed registration form. All competitors who do not choose the mail-back option must pick up their packets and bib numbers from the race expo on Saturday, November 15. There is no day-of-race registration or packet pick-up.

Q07. Will there be separate skill categories?

A07. No. Since this is the first year for the skate event, we do not expect a large enough turnout to separate skaters into pro and advanced skill categories.

Q08. Is there a group discount?

A08. Yes! Groups of 10 or more may receive $5 off the pre-registration fee. To receive the group discount, please follow these directions:

1. Use the printed registration form. Do not register online.

2. Payment should be made with a single check. The discount is $5 off the pre-registration rate per entry, minimum 10 entries.

3. Mail the entry forms and check together in one packet to the address printed on the form. Entries must be received by 10/31/03 in order to qualify for the group discount.

Q09. How do I obtain a vendor booth? Can I sponsor the event?

A09. To obtain a vendor booth at the packet pickup expo and/or the finish line Party at the Pier, please contact Koz Enterprises directly at (858) 268-1250. They are seeking a sponsor to underwrite the inline skate race.

Q10. Who do I contact for more information?

A10. For more information about the inline skate race, please contact San Diego Street Elite at sdse@sk8.org or (858) 550-0180. For all other inquiries, including vendor booth and sponsorship information, please contact Koz Enterprises directly at (858) 268-1250.
